Re: Funny men
I think you also have to give a lot of credit to writers and directors. Already mentioned Eddie Braben transforming Morecambe & Wise and Barry Cryer was an incredibly creative writer,.

I was a fan of John Candy, Chevy Chase, Steve Martin and Bill Murray but watched The Three Amigos and Whose Harry Crumb again for the first time in years and was largely disappointed considering I remembered enjoying them years back.

All of those actors I have my favourites and some films that I wouldn't watch again. Found it odd so did a bit of research and interestingly found that not all, but generally the films I find the funniest were either written, directed or both by any one of John Hughes, Harold Ramis, Carl Reiner, Ron Howard or Ivan Reitman. A lot of the films I didn't find funny didn't have any of those on board in any capacity so writing and directing must affect our humour as well as the comedians involved.

Re: Funny men
Early 90's I can vaguely remember a programme hosted by Barry Cryer on BBC 1 for up and coming stand ups, Jack Dee was on it and he blew me away with his miserable and acid tongued routine.

"Why do they give names to hurricanes if a plane goes down they don't call it plane crash Terry do they".

"Isn't it hot out today? I've got my dog in the car outside"
Audience boo's
"Oh, it's ok I've put some newspaper down".

Jack Dee in Lead Balloon is a great shout as well as The Ice Cream Man Cometh. That episode of That Peter Kay Thing is the best thing he has ever done "I love the smell of raspberry in the morning". Obviously the episode In The Club lead to the series Pheonix Nights.

We used to go to Barking Saturday morning pictures where they would show either George Formby, Jerry Lewis & Dean Martin or Abbott & Costello films. Funny at the time.

Clive:
So I had about-, about a ten yard loop of green snot, you know, between my nose and the wall and I suddenly panicked ’cause I know the Guinness Book of Records requires verification. So I called Dolly…
Derek:
Oh-h, blimey, you were…
Clive:
I said, "Dolly, get in here…
Derek:
…crafty!
Clive:
I said, "Dolly, get in here quick with the polaroid, I want a witness of this ten yard line of snot", and, er, she said, "Oh, no, I can’t, I’m busy, you know, I’m…
Derek:
Fucking stupid cow.
Clive:
…busy.
Derek:
’cause she didn’t realise…
Clive:
An’ I said-, I said-, I said, "LOOK, I’M GOING FOR THE FUCKING GUINNESS BOOK OF WORLD RECORDS FOR A LONG TRAIL OF SNOT, I’VE GOT TEN YARDS HERE FOR YOU TO PHOTOGRAPH AND IT’S ABOUT FUCKING TIME YOU STARTED BEHAVING LIKE A WIFE!!!" And because I got over-heated…

Manuel 12:41 Sat Jan 13 Hope so it's certainly still fun. Agree about the other couple and the father in law who is brilliant. I think Timothy West was originally in the role but left due to his wife's (Prunella Scales) illness. I still think the American girl was good in the first series but they recast well. My favourite episodes are the Christmas special in the big house with Bobby Ball and the one when they went camping and the car broke down. I miss the character of Daisy, so dumb it was hilarious.

Re: Funny men
Zico - Respectfully disagree, I think it's as good now as it ever was. The other couple crack me up, plus his father in law. They are doing one more series I believe.

That Eric and Ernie sketch still cracks me up. The writer Eddie Braben deserves a lot of credit after their original writers walked out. Before Eddie they had a different type of humour but Braben brought in the relationship that they are known for now. Neither were over keen on the bed sharing scenes until Braben reminded them that it was good enough for Laurel and Hardy.

Manuel, Good shout on Lee Mack but I don't think Not Going Out is as good these days since they got married, had kids and lived in a bigger house etc. Better than a lot of crap on TV mind.

As a kid :-
The Two Ronnies
Morecambe & Wise
Fawlty Towers
Some Mother's Do Ave 'Em
Dear John (Kirk St Moritz made it for me)

The chemistry and friendship between Eric and Ernie was something special but Eric's humour will always have me in stitches.

Never really been into Ricky Gervais's stand up but when he was hosting the Golden Globes his put downs are worth a watch on Youtube.

I loved Lee Mack when he first got pretty famous but haven't paid much attention to his stand up in recent years.
